FLCH + Mosaic Health:

Answers to your questions

_

Finger Lakes Community Health (FLCH) has announced its intention to explore the potential for Mosaic Health to become part of the organization. Joining forces would enable us to share resources and expand our patient outreach. The move would help us to serve patients better and fulfill our already similar missions because one larger organization would have a more influential voice in advocating for community health. Pending due diligence and regulatory and board of directors’ approval, Mosaic Health may become part of FLCH by the end of 2025. We understand this news would raise questions for our patients and the general public. Here are some answers.

Q. Tell me more about Mosaic Health.

Founded in 1964, Mosaic Health is a Community Health Center (CHC)—part of a healthcare program designed to provide accessible, continuous, coordinated, and comprehensive patient-centered care, from family medicine to dental services to mental health and substance abuse. CHCs serve more than 32.5 million people across the U.S. In fact, 1 in 8 New York State residents is a patient at their local CHC. Mosaic has five locations, including Rushville, Ilion, Utica, Utica Dental, and a School-Based Health Center at the Marcus Whitman School District. They have approximately 127 employees serving 15,000 patients for medical, dental, and behavioral health services. For more information, visit www.mosaichealth.org

Q: Why is Mosaic Health considering joining Finger Lakes Community Health?

The new combined organization would be able to serve our communities better through greater efficiencies, shared resources, and recruitment power in hiring healthcare professionals as we grow.

Q: What makes Mosaic Health and FLCH compatible?

Both organizations serve patients of all incomes, ethnicities, and walks of life. Both are Community Health Centers (CHCs) that provide accessible, continuous, coordinated, and comprehensive patient-centered care, from family medicine to dental services to mental health and substance abuse.

Q: Would all the health centers of both organizations stay open?

We don’t anticipate any health center closings. There is very little overlap among the service areas and patients between the two organizations.

Q: Would I have a new provider?

No. We intend to maintain all current providers at both organizations and anticipate bringing on additional providers to care for our growing patient base.

Q: Would you still accept my insurance plan?

YES

Q: Would there still be a Sliding Fee Scale Discount Program?

Yes, it is a requirement of our certification.

Q: Could I visit health centers from each organization as a patient if I need to?

Yes, you would be able to visit the health center most convenient for you.

Q: How would this affect dental patients?

It would help the two organizations better meet the needs of dental patients. Mosaic Health’s Utica Dental, Community Dentistry of the Finger Lakes, and Community Dentistry of Mohawk Valley would continue to operate as usual. It’s worth noting that there’s been a nationwide shortage of dental professionals, and the combined organization would have more power to recruit dentists to its health centers.

Q: Both organizations have a school-based health center (SBHC). Do you expect any changes?

No. This is yet another program that we have in common. SBHCs can provide primary care, mental healthcare, dental services, nutrition education, health education, and other support. Mosaic Health operates the Marcus Whitman School-Based Health Center, and FLCH operates the Penn Yan School-Based Health Center. Both SBHCs would remain in place and we’re sure to learn more from each other.

Q: What would happen to Mosaic Health’s Refugee Health and the FLCH Agricultural Worker program?

Both would remain in place. This speaks to both organizations’ desire to provide healthcare to everyone, no matter their situation. Each provides interpretation and translation, transportation, and care management services.

Q: How many patients would the combined organization serve?

The combined organization would serve nearly 43,000 patients across Upstate New York.

Q: What would the combined organization be called?

The name of the combined organization will be determined later. Our current focus is to do our due diligence and explore the opportunities between the two organizations.

Q: When would you expect this to happen?

Pending our due diligence and regulatory approval, it may be complete before the end of 2025.

Q: I have another question, whom should I contact?
