Penn Yan, NY — October 17, 2016 — Finger Lakes Community Health is pleased to announce that Dr. Jose Canario has joined the organization as their new Medical Director overseeing the clinical staff. He will also be seeing patients at Ovid Community Health.
“Working for a community health center is important to me due to that word: community,” Dr. Canario says. Throughout the past ten years as a physician, he has come to realize that understanding a population through its individuals and families helps with the treatment of many health problems. Community involvement and the overall health of all its members are central to improving the health of his patients.
Dr. Canario’s approach to patient care involves creating and maintaining a partnership with his patients. He says, “I don’t believe I ‘provide health,’ instead I guide individuals, and their families, to better health through listening, advising, teaching, and making decisions together.”
From Geneva, NY, Dr. Canario earned his undergraduate degree from Salve Regina University and his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and is bilingual in English and Spanish. He looks forward to treating the diverse patients at Finger Lakes Community Health and helping them better understand the health issues they face.
Dr. Canario followed in his father’s footsteps as a family physician, but first served as a United States Naval Officer. He was awarded the Naval Achievement Medal for successfully organizing, training for, and passing a major Naval engineering inspection onboard a Naval ship. He then was stationed at a training command teaching doctors, lawyers, and nurses how to become Naval Officers.
